DSA Housing Rally Sunday!
If you’re following this campaign you probably already know that I care about housing justice. We’ve dedicated a major part of our platform to affordable housing and tenant protections, including specific proposals like enacting 21st century rent control, passing Just Cause eviction, and creating a Cambridge Community Land Trust.
But in addition to these steps we’ll be pushing for if I’m elected, there are things we can do right now to stand in solidarity with our neighbors who are facing housing injustice in their homes and neighborhoods. That’s why I want to let you know about the Stony Brook Tenants Union rally this Sunday, June 2 at 2:30pm and ask if you can join us there.
When: Sunday June 2nd, 2:30PM
Where: 140-145 Navarre Street and 150 Clare Avenue in Hyde Park
Public Transit: 32 Bus from Forest Hills Orange Line T stop. Or Fairmount stop on the Commuter Rail
I’ve been working with this tenants union since before I decided to run for City Council, and I’ve met residents who are dealing with toxic mold, flooding, and lack of heat in the winter. As the neighborhood becomes a more desirable place to live, some of them have also received dramatic rent increases and retaliatory eviction notices when they complain about apartment conditions.
Housing—like water, and clean air, and healthcare—is a basic necessity. We shouldn’t have to put up with corporate landlords putting profit over safe living conditions.
I’m going to take a break from campaigning this Sunday at 2:30pm to join the rally. I hope you can join me to send a message to the housing complex’s management company, and to problematic corporate landlords all over Cambridge and Boston, that their conduct is not okay and that these tenants are not in this struggle alone—there are people all over the city paying attention and standing alongside them.
If you’re interested in volunteering at the rally alongside other folks from the tenants union, City Life Vida Urbana and Boston DSA, please take two minutes to fill out this online form.
Hope to see you this Sunday at the rally! And thanks for being part of a movement that puts people before profit when it comes to housing.
